A couple weeks before Dean's time is up, he comes down with a cold/flu/fever type of thing. Not a great way to spend what time you have remaining. But it does lend itself to more reflection. This story uses little asides and dialoge from the show as flashbacks, giving it the feel of lots of different times and moments converging into one. It's a great character piece and you just can't help but want to hug these guys.

comments

We get to see him through all the stages of the illness as he fights and hides it until it gets too bad to handle. And, of course, we get to see him give into it in the end.

comments

It's a stand-alone novella-length story about Tony finally facing the demons of his past and trying to get through them. What works for me in this fic is how carefully it's constructed. It's not as simple as "I was raped, but now I'm in love!" Oh, no. It's slow and painfully realistic. And just when it seems it can't get worse, it does. Even so, Gibbs is there with strength and support. There are layers and cover-ups and all sorts of emotional discoveries. In fact, it works so well with Tony's character I had no trouble buying into it. I read it online (finished it on a train, actually). I loved it so much I bought it in zine form and I've read it again.

comments

Batman Fic: Old Enough 2: The Flu Blues

Dick is 16 and Bruce's ward. IOW, UNDERAGE fic.
Direct link to piece: http://www.squidge.org/~peja/cgi-bin/viewstory.php?sid=30585
Your thoughts: Dick's moody, recovering from the flu and feeling insecure. I don't usually read underage fics, but I stumbled upon this one and was charmed by it. I love how Dick feels all sick and unloved by the one person he wants looking after him. It dances around Batman & Robin's relationship as well as Bruce & Dick's relationship. And even though Dick spends the entire fic feeling completely miserable (including complaining and acting out for attention), it ends in a most satisfying way. But DEFINITELY read the warning here.

comments

X-Men Fic: A Bamf Too Many

Instead of bamfing to school, however, he winds up in much more compromised situations... for the other X-Men, at least. He teleports into bathrooms and into rooms where lovers are passionately at it. Awkward! I enjoyed watching everyone's reactions and I liked seeing his sneezes, certainly, especially when he tries not to. Poor fuzzy blue elf. Luckily, it's another furry blue X-Man to the rescue :-)

comments

It could very easily be expanded, so keep an eye out for that, but for now it's just a small ficlet/drabble describing Tony's reactions to the abusive relationship he finds himself in. I had no trouble picturing this happening for the man (he does always seem to be beat up... and he does torture himself when it comes to relationships on the show). I loved all the little details like the backback that put me right in their world. And I loved Gibbs' part here. Short but sweet and definitely worth the read.

comments

This story explores George's reaction to losing Fred. He can't face his life as it was now that Fred's not in it. He runs from his store, his home, his family, and Lee. Throughout, there are short letters to and from George, which give some great insight. And there are some strange parts like George being taken in by a strange woman he meets in a bar. But all his running and thinking and dreaming gets him to where he needs to be, which is obviously back home, coping with the reality of the situation. It's a touching, emotional story that does SUCH a good job with the twins. It really made me think. But it's also got some wonderfully funny moments and some hot sex. What more could you possibly want? Seriously. Go read it.

comments

Ianto hasn't been taking care of himself whilst on suspension. Myfanwy gets lonely and bored. The story of how Ianto made the transition from being an outcast on suspension to being slightly less outcast and off suspension. Ianto-centric teamfic.
Your thoughts/reasons why people should look at it: I have a weakness for good team-fics and this one spreads the post-Cyberwoman angst and blame all around. It makes the mutual comforting all the sweeter. Sick, despondent Ianto makes me melt. The team learns exactly how much work Ianto normally does around the Hub. And Myfanwy is just awesome, and cuter than a dinosaur has any right to be!

comments

Dragons are more dangerous than they seem, you know. Ron is unable to do much, Harry is just a little angry and worried and guilty. Their banter and friendship are great. But so is what you see coming a mile away: Ron needing a little extra help with an erection and Harry being an exceptionally good friend. Things don't miraculously become hot and heavy between them. They don't talk about what it might mean. They don't even want to think about it. Until the next time. This is wonderfully written and has great structure as well, jumping around within the world of scars and hurt- emotional and physical- and ending up somewhere damn sexy.

comments

Man from U.N.C.L.E.: The Virus Affair by P.R. Zed

Posted by: iff

I was trying for some of my earlier fandoms, things that aren't very prevalent anymore. There was some good h/c in so many of them (What do you expect from buddy-buddy cop/spy shows where the boys are, at the very least, getting shot at constantly by the bad guys? Not to mention getting captured and tortured in various ways...), but several of them are primarily zine fandoms, and not all of the zines have been put up online (spent quite a while searching for my favorite Pros h/c fic but it seems to only be available in an electronic format on the Circuit Archive CD).

Type of h/c: illness, angst
Title: The Virus Affair
Author: P.R. Zed
Rating: not rated but I'd place it at K/G
Fandom: Man from U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: Napoleon/Illya
Warnings: none
Direct link to piece: http://przed.com/fic/uncle/virus.html
Your thoughts/reasons why people should look at it: P.R. Zed has been writing in this fandom for ages and ages, her writing is very true to the series, and her characterization is dead on. This one's primarily an adventure type fic: Napoleon and Illya are moving in together, Illya goes back to make sure he hasn't left anything in his old apartment and gets captured by THRUSH, where he's used as a test subject for a virus that they've engineered. Illya is locked up in an isolation ward by his captors while Napoleon does everything in his power to find his partner and lover. You're not going to find wimpy!Illya or caveman!Napoleon...the comfort is a bit understated, but that makes it (to me, anyway) even better because it's so true to the characters: you can see how much they care for each other without weepy declarations of love.

comments

Ianto's sick and not enjoying it, and Jack doesn't seem to be very happy about it either. Their interactions are wonderful, I think the author got their voices down pretty well, and sick!Ianto is absolutely adorable. This one's one of the fics that I go back to if I need a good helping of warm fuzzies.

comments

It just hits that magic hurt/comfort button in an almost instantaneous way. It briefly mentions Jasper's previous pains over and over, but each one is immediately made better by the presence of Alice. It's very short, but it manages to make my heart ache in that oh so good h/c way about 4 times in the story.

comments

Primeval: Nick/Connor Series by telperion_15

Posted by: iff

Okay, so I checked with our Fearless Leader about this, since there is h/c throughout the series and some of it doesn't make sense unless you've read the rest of the series, and got the go-ahead to post the series as one piece. I'm going to start with general info for the series and then put little blurbs about the individual stories with hurty/comforty goodness under a cut to save people's flists.

Type of h/c: Lots of emotional hurt/comfort and angst throughout. Physical injury at points. Illness in one story.
Title: Nick/Connor Series
Author: telperion_15
Rating: Various, anywhere from K+/PG13 to MA/NC17 (She uses MPAA ratings here, and the ARC uses the Fiction Ratings system. I've listed both for all fics reviewed.)
Fandom: Primeval
Pairing: Nick/Connor
Warnings: At various parts in the series (at the time of this post) - attempted dub-con, canon character death
Direct link to piece: Series is located here on LJ (you'll need to scroll down a bit 'til you get to the Nick/Connor Series) or here on the ARC.
Your thoughts/reasons why people should look at it: Extremely well-written series starting from the beginning of the second series (ep. 7 if you watched it as one season like they aired it on BBCA) and following the two men's growing relationship through the second series and beyond. Yes, there are spoilers for the first two series of the show (all that's aired as of the time of this post). Telperion_15 does an excellent job with characterization, as well as plots in the more adventure-type fics and pure fluffiness in the slice of life snippets. She also hits every one of my hurty/comforty happybuttons: the two men supporting each other through all of the emotional upheaval of the second series, Connor!whumpage and Nick taking such good care of him, and the one illness story made me ALL KINDS of happy! Please note that this series seems to be ongoing (a new piece was posted a few weeks ago), but each individual story that has been posted so far is complete. Also, in addition to the regular characters from the series, some fanon OCs in the form of the Special Forces guys show up at various points.

( Series details under here. There will be spoilers, major for the TV series and minor for the stories (in that discussion of the later stories may give away things about the earlier ones). )

comments
